The Challenge
The Owners at Mercy Hospital wanted to do a lot more than just construct another building: they needed to establish a reputation as Baltimore's leader in women's health care. To accomplish their goal, they envisioned a landmark facility, to be built in the city's busiest district. And, the new building must connect to the existing hospital via a climate-controlled sky bridge over a city street. But before the building could go up, six existing buildings had to come down. The new building was a lot line-to-lot line, limited access site. So all utilities and city services had to be abandoned in the process. This project required coordination not only among owners and construction personnel, but also among several downtown authorities. And as always, it was critical to complete the project on time, and on budget.
The Result
Within the required timeframe and budget, we built a Class A, six story medical office building, with an attached nine story, 800-car parking garage. Standing tall in a thriving district with its
"leaf and cross" motif, this building beautifully echoes the design of the existing hospital. The Owners are proud that this Baltimore building makes a strong statement: The heart of women's
healthcare is at Mercy.
